louisiana literature: Lydia Davis

Framåt kvällningen på fredag så var det dags för Lydia Davis som läste noveller från sin samling och berättade om sitt skrivande. Jag satt hoptryckt under en tältduk och lyssnade via storbild och riktigt förtätat blev det när hon läste In a house besieged. 

In a house besieged lived a man and a woman. From where they cowered in the kitchen the man and woman heard small explosions. “The wind,” said the woman. “Hunters,” said the man. “The rain,” said the woman. “The army,” said the man. The woman wanted to go home, but she was already home, there in the middle of the country in a house besieged.

Hon berättade om hur hon i sin ungdom experimenterade med prosa och lyrik innan hon hittade till novellens form och tycker nu att novellen är den bästa sortens text. Hon känner en oändlig frihet i sitt skrivande av novellerna samtidigt som det innebär mycket hårt arbete. It’s a struggle and a labour compared to traditional writing. All the elements have to be there nomatter the length och the piece of text. Insamlandet av material sker i vardagen, hon skriver ned intryck i en liten anteckningsbok och sedan bearbetar hon dem. Impulsen blir ett intryck som konfronteras med logik.
